Overall, the 4- Hour Workweek is an interesting book with a catchy title and an unorthodox approach to making money. Life and financial overachievement are not quite that simple, but I applaud Ferriss for approaching this age- old issue from a fresh perspective. Many came from far dreaming of gold. They buy one jeans after another. He doesn’t seem to have much of soul though, and thus he ignores one of the purposes of work in one’s life. Our work not only gives our life meaning, but it helps enrich others and make society work.

I don’t think that stretching rules for my own needs makes me a better person. The reviewer who described this author as a snake-oil salesman is right – and if you buy this book, you’ll do nothing to help yourself. Meanwhile they’re struggling with finding time for family, an exercise program, and a life — maybe even struggling to get real work done rather than make-work. I know that’s where he gets me. It’s a highly immature and unrealistic approach to life. In summary: set up a website, get someone else to run it, and go enjoy all the free time this will create for you. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of bad. It’s easier said than done. Written in a fun, engaging style, I would file this under financial porn.

With all that was taken out of context and twisted, it was clear that most of the 1-star reviewers either didn’t read the book or don’t have sufficient reading comprehension to be a critic of anything. The book only sells because of the hope it gives 9-5 workers that it’s possible. Don’t waste yours. I think this idea of Life Style Design is a great one. He tells you to find a market, find the demographics of your product, make a product and sell it. He rails against the “deferred life plan”–working a decade (or three) doing something you don’t like to save money for retirement, where you’ll (supposedly) do what you’ve always wanted. Ferriss gives some good time-management advice as well.

He goes through the steps but I don’t think it’s that simple. Also keep in mind that the practices he’s encouraging (and using) are basically parasitic to the rest of society.

This book is 80 percent fluff and nonsense with 20 percent information. This is another one of those feel good tell the reader what they want to believe lifestyle books. It may be glamorous work, but it’s work nonetheless.

First off this book is not a get rich scheme, although I can see how that impression is easily given, it’s a book about how to rearrange your life in such a way as to give more time and energy to what is important and less time to what isn’t. The author goes into details about an internet business strategy that can lead to wealth, and while it’s true any business can lead to wealth, an internet based business can be set up in such a way as to lead to more free time to pursue other things besides making money. Former readers have little/nothing new to go on at a time when there is a need for even more (not less) REAL information. New readers will absolutely want to purchase this version rather than the first version since it is packed with great examples, testimonials and other tidbits but prior readers will find very little additional value from reading this version. The other 80% is basically tripe about the author hyping himself up and giving unethical advice on how to do business. I suggest going to your local bookstore and flipping through the book to see if any of it can apply to you instead of buying it.

A major let-down to longtime fans and blatant laziness that is insulting cash grab. For former readers that insist on ignoring this review and buying the new version anyway…you were warned. Poor ethics; however, does not preclude a book from becoming a best seller. In the next section, the author instructs us on improving our productivity. This book gets off to a good start, by making the valid (if trite) points that one should not defer all gratification indefinitely; and making money should not be an end in itself, but rather a means towards making it possible for you to do the things that you want to do. It also offers some useful (if basic) ways to save time, such as not checking email constantly, but rather dealing with it all at once at fixed (and not too frequent) times. I disliked it so at first my spouse encouraged me to quit reading it but the book was a gift from a friend so I wanted to finish it. I thought again about quitting when I ran across Ferriss’ suggestion that you didn’t have to finish everything you started.

It is NOT EASY to come up with a good, profitable idea. The .com bust is evidence of that.

It’s the people who have extra money TO help. And those are also the people who volunteer the most because surprise they have more TIME to donate than any of the other groups.

Things picked up a bit once we got into Chapter 5: The End of Time Management. There were lots of good bits of information in there about how to better organize your time and your daily activities so that you control your day, your day does not control you.

You sell this product in exclusive magazines and TV – you don’t try and mass market it because then it becomes a commodity. A lot of his stories sound like the fantasies of a teenager. There are other routes to happiness that don’t involve being a snake oil sales man. I bet in 5 years’ time, he’ll be onto the next “big thing”. The first 100 pages (as others here have said) is a good story and has some good ideas on living for the day.

The new material is solid examples, case studies, new resources and it addresses how to navigate lifestyle design in a rapidly changing economy. Tim includes a list of things learned in 2008 along with lessons learned; this section of the book was priceless. But I was miserable and was secretly contemplating a career-change. It became very clear that some people really truly believe that working few hours on work you hate to free up time for more productive and meaningful life activities is somehow “immoral.” I guess the Puritanical mentality this country started out with (earliest settlers here) has seeped deeper into our overall culture than we once imagined.

Advice is given: quit watching so much television, ignore the nightly news, don’t spend too much time reading fiction and keep non-fiction down to a list of good books and work them one at a time. Stay off the internet going to check email constantly or checking the news web sites. Do not spend every day in a job you hate to buy things you do not need. The author recommends reading Walden.

However, for someone advocating a 4-Hour Workweek (you can’t tell me he’s not – it’s the name of the book) the steps you must go through to create and set up your business seem like they will take an extensive amount of work and time. Pretty much the same amount of work most entrepreneurs have to deal with when starting up a company. First and most important, ask your friends and family what they think about your idea. They care about you (hopefully) and will be honest with you.

He also tells people who have jobs to outsource their work to India or somewhere which while makes sense financially – the company hired people to do their work otherwise they would have outsourced it in the beginning. Most of his ideas follow suit but he does have a few good points.
