Is Pinball Down For The Count?

Having survived a couple of World Wars, countless recessions, the indignation of lifestyle police, and most recently the video game phenomenon it appeared that pinball was just too tough to kill. That’s why it was a surprise when WMS Industries, the dominant player in the industry for the past decade and the maker of Williams and Bally machines, announced that it was getting out of the business several years ago. Shed no tears for WMS, who is making money hand over fist with their video poker and slot machine division. In fact, following the announcement that they were getting out of the pinball business the company’s stock experienced a small but substantial gain.

Until the 1980’s, pinball dominated the arcade. In the late 1970’s and on the heels of the film adaptation of The Who’s pinball themed rock opera ‘Tommy’ arcades featured row after row of new machines from over a half dozen US based manufacturers. Countless other machines were made worldwide. The first shot of the video game industry didn’t make much of a dent–’Pong’ was revolutionary, but its gameplay was downright dull compared to pinball. It also required two players, another downside in the often solitary isolation of the arcade. The first real challenge to pinball was the second generation of video games, including ‘Space Invaders’ and ‘Asteroids’.

Pinball hung in there, however, and through the early eighties continued to make some solid games. The ones that come immediately to mind are games like Firepower (which helped launched the now ubiquitous multi-ball feature), Black Knight (offering an early version of the looping ramps found on many modern machines) and a couple of fun machines from Bally Paragon and Flash Gordon. Several games were spun off from video games, including a couple of good ones”Spy Hunter and Space Invaders and a number of not so good ones based on the Pac Man video games. Bally even made a game called Baby Pac Man that was a video/pinball hybrid. For awhile, the choice between pinball and video games was similar to the choice between Pepsi and Coke: both were equally pervasive and it was simply a matter of personal preference.

It was the late 1980s”when video games became more technologically advanced and began to offer superior play experiences”that pinball lost its way. Depending on the manufacturer, they did it in different ways. Gottlieb and others made simple, traditional games that just couldnt compete with their video counterparts. Bally and other manufacturers went the opposite route”by cramming so much onto a playfield that the game hardly resembled traditional pinball. Some of Ballys late 1980s games”with so much playfield gimmickry going on”were nearly unplayable. By this point”and in large part due to the paucity of compelling pinball machines turned out during this era”video had taken over the arcade. Some larger arcades continued to offer a few pinball machines to placate hardcores, while some eliminated pinball altogether.

In the 1990’s, pinball began to experience a bit of a comeback driven by well designed, enjoyable games that finally got the balance between traditional gameplay and modern technology right. Williams was at the forefront of the return to excellent design and gameplay, and its hard to think of a Williams game from this period that wasnt a fun game to play, if not a borderline classic. The mainstream media began to notice the renaissance, and noted that the average pinball machine received much more repeat business than the average video game and about the devotion of the pinball player.

With the century drawing to a close, it seemed that the Williams/Bally outfit had found a niche and would be able to grind out pinball machines for the aficionados forever. The final nail in the coffin, however, was a lot of societal changes beyond their control. For one, video games and video arcades became less profitable as companies like Sony and Nintendo were able to transform a lot of the high end gameplay to the home platform. Meanwhile, trends like new urbanism,which saw a return to downtown storefronts and the growth of online shopping combined to hurt traditional shopping malls. Eventually the WMS corporate braintrust decided to pull the plug on pinball and concentrate on their highly profitable gambling machine business. From a business standpoint, it probably made sense but that didnt make it any easier for lifelong pinball enthusiasts to reconcile with.

Pinball still soldiers on, with something of a hipster revival of the games in cities like Seattle and Portland where lovingly restored machines sit alongside new offerings by Stern Pinball, the only remaining manufacturer in the world. At this point, it appears that the only hope for pinball players is that some effort will be made to preserve the machines that already exist.

It’s well worth a long chat to see the expectations of your industry. Which exams they will want you to have and in what way you can gain some industry experience. It’s also worth spending time assessing how far you wish to go as it will often present a very specific set of accreditations.

Seek advice from an experienced industry professional, even if you have to pay a small fee – it’s much safer and cheaper to investigate at the start if you’ve chosen correctly, instead of discovering after 2 years that the job you’ve chosen is not for you and have to return to the start of another program.

The somewhat scary thought of securing your first computer related job is often made easier by some training providers because they offer a Job Placement Assistance facility. The honest truth is that it isn’t so complicated as you might think to land your first job – as long as you’ve got the necessary skills and qualifications; the shortage of IT personnel in Britain looks after that.

Various junior support jobs have been offered to people who are still learning and have yet to take their exams. At the very least this will get your CV into the ‘possible’ pile and not the ‘no’ pile.

Do ensure you don’t put hundreds of hours of effort into your studies, then call a halt and leave it in the hands of the gods to secure your first position. Stop procrastinating and get on with the job. Put as much energy and enthusiasm into securing a good job as you did to get trained.

Explaining Renewable Energy Certification – Where To Go

It is by using natural resources such as tidal or wind energy – collectively known as ‘Green Energy’ – that we could meet our daily energy needs. They are considered ‘Green’ because they are environmentally friendly. The older energy skill sets have had value for years, especially when we think of wind power and windmills. Regardless of this, we are mainly talking about using modern techniques to offer planet friendly and eco-efficient solutions.

The range of renewable energy technologies utilised within the home environment includes both Solar Thermal, and Solar Water Heating Collectors. For electricity created through roof-installed panels, you would need Photovoltaic Panels or PV’s. Then there are Stoves that burn Bio-Pellets – which make up the subject commonly known as Biomass Energy. What shouldn’t be forgotten is the heat stored in the ground from the Sun – often simply referred to as Ground Source Heat Pumps. At the end there are two of the most mature forms of energy production in the UK – albeit renamed now to Wind Turbines and Hydropower.

Thermal Solar Energy – This technology is based around two core types of system. First, we have Solar Water Heating Collectors, which absorb energy from the Sun and transfer this into hot water. Then we have the work of the Photovoltaic Heat Collectors, often called Solar Electrical Panels – which transform solar radiation into electricity. Typically, these panels are found on roofs – and need to be away from any light blocks such as trees, chimneys and other buildings.

Within Solar Energy overall, Solar Water Power is most commonly used in the UK. Solar Water heating systems are extremely important – and can provide over half of the hot water needs for houses within the UK. The typical cost for installation ranges from 500-1500 pounds for a DIY system, all the way through to 2-5k for a professional fit.

Systems Utilising Biomass Energy: This term encompasses all forms of natural products – such as plant and animal material. It is extremely useful – in that it can produce a range of power sources, including heat and electricity. The ability to generate electricity is one of the UK’s main green strengths – as it has one of the larger Biomass legacies within Europe. One of the main factors of this style of energy is the result without the impact on C02. With a new tree being planted as each is felled, you can see how the C02 produced during heating is minimised – and why the system is deemed sustainable.

To meet the need, fast growing trees, known as Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) are utilised. Of equal importance is the ability to produce dry matter – and perennial grasses are very good for this. Of equal importance, although maybe less well known, are Municipal and Agricultural Waste. Agricultural Waste is commonly formed as a by-product of traditional agricultural work. However, waste derived from food or wood is another biomass entity – called Municipal Waste.

Geo-Thermal Energy Technology: Used in the generation of both warm water and electricity, this energy mainly comes from the Sun and heats the Earth. Using the ground temperature of around 12 degrees in the UK – we can both heat and cool buildings. Although heat pumps require energy to function, their rate of return is superb – being a four-fold benefit over the energy put in. Heat source pump energy can go one step further (by gaining a 100 percent return) if the energy to power them comes from items such as wind turbines or solar electrical panels.

Wind Energy Systems: Wind Energy as a sustainable source of energy has been going on for millennia. However, in more recent times there’s been the option to recover the energy for its own sake – and deliver this either to a home unit or to the local power grid. The ability to utilise wind generation is considered to be greatest in the UK. Potentially, we can produce 10 percent of our annual energy needs through wind power, although at present within the UK we still only use 1 percent. Electricity can be produced from as little as 2p per kWh, but generally comes in somewhere between 2-10p per kWh. Recovery of the cost involved is somewhere between 6-9 months.

Lastly, we have a discipline that the UK does well – namely Hydropower. Energy creation from moving water is very old – although it is now being done in new ways. It is this type of energy production that could meet 2 percent of all the UK’s demand.

A hydropower system transforms the kinetic energy of the moving water into another type of energy by means of a turbine. By using a dam or a natural river drop, these turbines do not require water storage. It is by using the eroded national distribution systems, that allows for outdated sluices and dams to be used by techniques known as ‘Micro-Hydro’. Having said that, this process could still generate 200mW of the National Capacity. The capital cost of installing a micro-hydro system can run between 200 and 3000 pounds per kW of energy output.

It is the growing worldwide energy requirement that is causing the growth in ‘Green Energy’. The UK remains one of the main beneficiaries of this technology.

It is the drive for installations in the domestic sector that looks to favour jobs such as plumbers and electricians. It is the political view of this type of energy generation that results in grants and financial aid becoming ever-more prevalent. It is important to gain the correct qualifications to install these items. You could consider either plumbing or electrical training programs that highlight green installation.

Comparing Solar Energy Classes Across The UK

It can be seen that the route to ‘Green Energy’ is growing considerably, especially in light of the need for increasing energy outputs throughout the Western World. To be fair, the UK domestic market is leading the resurgence with the variety of schemes detailed above.

The CompTIA A+ course has four specialist sections – you need to pass exams in 2 different areas to reach the level of competent in A+. For this reason, most training providers simply provide 2 of the training options. We consider that this isn’t enough – certainly you’ll have the qualification, but knowing about the others will give you a distinct advantage in the workplace, where you’ll need to know about all of them. So that’s why you deserve training in all four areas.

When you embark on the A+ computer training course you will develop an understanding of how to build computers and fix them, and work in antistatic conditions. You’ll also cover fault-finding and diagnostic techniques, both remotely and via direct access.

Were you to add Network+ training, you’ll also learn how to look after networks, giving you the facility to apply for more senior positions.

Students will sometimes miss checking on something that can make a profound difference to their results – the way the company divides up the courseware sections, and into how many bits.

Training companies will normally offer some sort of program spread over 1-3 years, and send out each piece as you complete each section or exam. Sounds reasonable? Well consider these facts:

How would they react if you didn’t complete each and every module within the time limits imposed? And maybe you’ll find their order of completion doesn’t come as naturally as another different route may.

It would be hard to imagine if a better time or market settings will exist for getting trained into this quickly expanding and blossoming business.

Some training providers will provide a useful Job Placement Assistance facility, designed to steer you into your first job. Because of the growing shortage of skills in Britain even when times are hard, there’s no need to make too much of this option though. It’s actually not as hard as some people make out to get your first job once you’re trained and certified.

Whatever you do, don’t wait till you have qualified before polishing up your CV. As soon as you start a course, mark down what you’re doing and place it on jobsites!

You may not have got to the stage where you’ve qualified when you will get your initial junior support role; but this can’t and won’t happen unless you’ve posted your CV on job sites.

If you don’t want to travel too far to work, then you’ll probably find that a local IT focused recruitment consultancy could be of more use than the trainer’s recruitment division, due to the fact that they’re far more likely to know local employment needs.

A big frustration of many training course providers is how hard trainees are prepared to work to get top marks in their exams, but how un-prepared that student is to get the role they’ve studied for. Don’t falter at the last fence.

As you’re considering studying for the MCSE certificate, it’s likely you’ll come into one of two categories. You could be about to enter the computer sector, and you’ve found the industry has many opportunities for qualified people. World-class organisations tend to use an online 24 hours-a-day system pulling in several support offices across the globe. You will have an interface which switches seamlessly to the best choice of centres any time of the day or night: Support when you need it.

Never make do with anything less. Direct-access round-the-clock support is really your only option when it comes to computer-based training. Perhaps you don’t intend to study during the evenings; usually though, we’re out at work while the support is live.

We can guess that you’ve always enjoyed practical work – the ‘hands-on’ person. If you’re anything like us, the world of book-reading and classrooms is something you’ll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but it doesn’t suit your way of doing things. Ask almost any knowledgeable advisor and we’d be amazed if they couldn’t provide you with many worrying experiences of salespeople ripping-off unsuspecting students. Ensure you only ever work with an experienced industry professional who asks some in-depth questions to find out what’s appropriate to you – not for their pay-packet! You need to find the right starting point of study for you.

Occasionally, the starting point of study for someone with experience will be massively dissimilar to the student with none.

Working through a foundation module first will sometimes be the most effective way to commence your computer studies, depending on your skill level at the moment.

Of course: a training course or an accreditation is not the ultimate goal; a job you’re training for is. A lot of colleges seem to over-emphasise the qualification itself.

It’s possible, in many cases, to get a great deal of enjoyment from a year of study and then find yourself trapped for decades in something completely unrewarding, entirely because you stumbled into it without the correct research when you should’ve – at the outset.

You’ll want to understand the expectations of your industry. What particular exams they’ll want you to gain and how to gain experience. It’s definitely worth spending time assessing how far you’d like to progress your career as it will present a very specific set of accreditations.

It’s worth seeking guidance from someone who knows the commercial realities of the market you’re considering, and who can offer ‘A day in the life of’ type of explanation for that career-path. This really is very important as you’ll need to fully understand if you’re going down the right road.

Cisco Training In Interactive Format Considered

Should you be interested in training in Cisco, a CCNA is in all probability what you’ll need. Training in Cisco is intended for individuals who want to learn about routers and network switches.
