Hypnosis and its derivative, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of many myths created by layman’s imagination. Some regard them to be occult whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Some of the popular misconceptions associated with hypnosis and the truth behind them are discussed here.
There is no mysticism or rituals involved in hypnosis. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have an important role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very simple to acquire and practice. People refuse to acknowledge hypnosis even after watching participants successfully undergoing it in public sessions. They believe that the subjects who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not strong enough to resist the impact of the practitioner. But that is not true at all. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally tough and are trying their best to avoid the spell.
Another notion about hypnosis that people have made up arbitrarily is that it is an altered state of consciousness. A person under hypnosis does not get shut off from the external world, but stays completely aware of the happenings around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject calms down entirely and is thus able to focus fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.
Some scientific findings have stated that only about 5% of the population is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third misconception on this list. Although, the finding has some shred of truth to it, what makes it hollow is the fact that the scientists used the identical hypnosis procedure for everyone. People differ in their characters and personalities, and thus there have to be different hypnosis techniques to fit the temperaments of different people.
Meditation and hypnosis are often thought to be the same by people. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a mental state and usually has nothing to do with communication. Similarly, a period of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not correct. The person doesn’t interact to achieve a state of trance, whereas hypnosis is impossible without communication.
It is often believed that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot cause changes in appearance or in patterns of conduct of a person. Hypnosis is obviously not wizardry that it can transform the physical appearance of an individual just like that. But by mentally conditioning a person to abandon addictive habits like overeating and chain smoking, and by raising one’s motivation levels, hypnosis can bring about important physical alterations in a person and ensure a healthier body.
If an individual believes in all the misconceptions that exist regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a better and healthier life.
